History

On 4th July 2015, the first Warren Road Primary School Triathlon was held - in memory of Gary Bryant. The event was a huge success and showed that many pupils at the school had the desire to take part - and did so with great enjoyment!

It was always hoped that putting on the event would lead to something bigger and owing to the positive feedback received it is anticipated that the triathlon will be an annual event. We were overwhelmed by the interest in the triathlon and the number of children who took part and so …. we decided to start a triathlon club.

Founded in July 2015, the White Horse Triathlon Club aims to bring the sport of triathlon to the students of Warren Road Primary School - and in the future to all children in the local area.

Who are we, what do we do?

White Horse Triathlon Club is an Orpington based triathlon club, affiliated with Triathlon England, for children. The club is run by triathlon enthusiasts and aims to provide activities for children that are fun, healthy and that develop their swim, bike and run basic and racing skills in a safe environment.

The club activities are run by qualified, licensed coaches who are all DBS checked.

Who can be a member?

Our Members are the children who participate in our club sessions – White Horse Triathlon Club caters for children aged 5 (school year 1) to 16 years old (school year 11), in exceptional circumstances we may accept other ages.

We are not able to accept children who are unable to swim/cycle or cycle with the assistance of stabilisers.

We welcome parents/carers to all our activities to watch. We are keen to involve parents/carers in the club in many different ways – anyone interested in helping who would like to find out more can ask anyone who is coaching or helping out during our club sessions, or alternatively our website provides contact details.

Our Officials, who operate under our Constitution, lead our club. We hold Annual General Meetings and occasionally Special Meetings – parents/carers will be informed of these meetings through the clubs Newsletter and Website, will be invited to attend and will be able to take part in the decision making processes along with our club Officials, Coaches and Helpers.

Where do we meet and when?

We mainly meet during term time, with extra events hosted during school holidays.

Our current sessions times are:

  • Wednesday 18:00 – 19:00 at Biggin Hill Memorial Swimming Pool for the swim session
  • Friday 16:45 – 17:45 at Warren Road Primary School for the run session
  • Cycling  ad hoc basis at present

See the Training section for full details.

What are the costs?

There is an annual fee, which includes the Triathlete’s registration to Triathlon England (providing a race licence and insurance). There are fees for each term’s activities that should be paid in full at the start of each term. We try to keep the costs as low as we can in order to be affordable to as many people as possible.

Current costs are £40 annual fee, payable in September. If joining in January this will be £30 for the remainder of the first year. Or £25 if joining at Easter for the remainder of that first year. For families with more than a single member there is a 10% discount on the annual fee for all siblings that join.

The current weekly cost (for all three sessions) is £7, which will be paid in full at the start of each term.

Important Information

Getting to and from the club

The parent/carer should make arrangements for their child to travel to and from coaching sessions and competitions.

We would like Members to arrive on time (if they arrive early they will need to wait with their parent/carer before entering the session) and be collected promptly at the end of a training session or Competition. If anyone is going to be late picking their child up, they should contact one of our coaches or helpers. Please be aware that not every coach and every helper attends every session.

Disability and Medical Information

We ask for details of any disabilities or medical conditions, relevant to participating in the Club, in our Membership Application and Consent Form. For the safety of all children, it is important that the club is kept informed of any changes or recent injuries that may be relevant.

If a parent/carer would like to talk to someone at the club about this information or their child’s involvement with the club, please contact our Welfare Officer – details of whom can be found on our website.

In the case of accidents or illness or concerns over child safety / welfare

In the case of serious accidents or illnesses, we will try to contact the parent/carer immediately and will also look to deal with the accident/illness appropriately. If parents/carers have any particular guidance for the club under these circumstances they should inform us by adding a comment to the Membership Application and Consent Form. With all club activities, in all locations, there will be access to a first aid kit and have access to information on local emergency services.

If a parent/carer has any concerns over child safety/child welfare/child protection, please either contact:

  • our Welfare Officer, or
  • Triathlon England’s Child Protection Lead Officer directly – details of whom can be found on their website.

Code of Conduct for Members

As a Member of the club, all children are expected to abide by the following code:

  • arrive for training and competition in good time to prepare properly
  • wear suitable kit (including a helmet) and clothing for all activity sessions, as agreed with the coach (further details can be found in the Training section)
  • warm up and cool down properly on all occasions
  • play within the rules and respect officials and all their decisions
  • be a good sport by applauding all good performances, whether they are made by our club or the opposition
  • control your temper - verbal abuse of officials and other riders, or deliberately distracting/provoking an opponent is not acceptable or permitted behaviour in any sport
  • work equally hard for yourself and your club -remember, the club’s performance will benefit, and so will you
  • respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of their gender, ability, disability, cultural background or religion
  • treat all participants in triathlon as you would like to be treated - no bullying or taking unfair advantage of another participant
  • cooperate with your coach, club mates and opponents - remember, without them there would be no competition
  • thank officials and opponents after competition.

Code of Conduct for Parents / Carers

All Parents/Carers are expected to abide by the following code:

  • inform the club of any specific health requirements or medical conditions of their child in advance of the coaching session by completion of the club Membership Application and Consent Form, and by subsequently informing the club of any changes
  • advise a Coach if their child has to leave early or is being collected by someone other than a parent/carer, giving details of the arrangement including who will be collecting their child, when and at what time
  • encourage their child to learn the rules and play within them
  • discourage unfair play and arguing with officials
  • help their child to recognise good performance, not just results
  • set a good example by recognising fair play and applauding the good performances of all
  • never punish or abuse a child for losing or making mistakes
  • publicly accept officials’ judgments and teach children to do likewise
  • support their child’s involvement and help them to enjoy their sport
  • use correct and proper language at all times
  • remember that children participate in sport for their enjoyment, not that of the parent/carer
  • support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities
  • respect the rights, dignity and worth of every young person regardless of their gender, ability, disability, cultural background or religion
  • show appreciation and respect for coaches, officials and administrators. Remember, without them, your child could not participate
  • pay promptly any fees that are due

Club Officials, Coaches and Helpers will also follow the above Code in their work for the club.
